Team GA Girl’s/Women's Wrestling Freestyle Techniques to Understand

So, You Want To Wrestle Freestyle...What Now?

Welcome, fearless girl wrestlers, to the exhilarating world of freestyle wrestling! Whether you're stepping onto the mat for the first time or transitioning from folkstyle, you're about to embark on an exciting journey filled with agility, strategy, and pure determination.  As you begin this journey, there are some things you need to know. First, there are some key differences between freestyle and folkstyle.  Let's go over some of the rule differences below:

#1- Scoring:  In freestyle, points are awarded for successful takedowns, throws, and exposures. Unlike folkstyle, there are no escape points, riding time, or near-fall criteria. The focus is on initiating dynamic offensive moves to gain points.

#2- Out of Bounds/ Step Out:  Freestyle wrestling allows for more extensive use of the mat, with competitors restarting in the center if one wrestler steps out of bounds. If a wrestler steps out, their opponent is awarded 1 point.  This encourages continuous action and discourages stalling.

#3- Par Terre (Ground Wrestling): Freestyle introduces the concept of par terre, where the action continues on the ground, opening up opportunities for gut wrenches, lace locks, and other turns to secure additional points.  Many that have transitioned from Folkstyle to Freestyle because of two reasons: NO STANDUPS and LOCKED HANDS ARE ALLOWED IN FREESTYLE!!!  That's right, the wrestler on the bottom can lay on the mat without fear of "stalling" due to not attempting to stand up.  Also, locking hands is encouraged in freestyle to help better leverage a variety of turns.

#4- Exposure and Danger Positions:  Freestyle emphasizes the importance of exposing your opponent's back to the mat, with specific points awarded for achieving danger positions. Mastering these techniques can be a game-changer in securing victory.  No need to hold for near-fall points.  The moment the opponent breaks 45 degrees, you've scored 2 points!

This is a very simplified explanation of how some of the scoring works.  Keep in mind that success in Freestyle wrestling also hinges on a diverse set of techniques; many of which you may already know from Folkstyle.  You will not have to reinvent the wheel as you transition to Freestyle, but you may need to look at things from a different perspective.  To help you navigate this thrilling terrain, we've curated a list of essential techniques fit for beginning and experienced wrestlers alike.  The link to those techniques is below.
